Create and Manage View Templates

View Templates help you format grids in Pigment faster and more consistently. Instead of setting up formatting manually each time, you can apply predefined styles that adapt to your View’s layout.

This article explains how View Templates work, the different types available, and how they interact with existing formatting.

What are View Templates?

View Templates let you apply predefined formatting to a View, so you can quickly create consistent, well-structured grids without rebuilding styles each time.

  • Set up faster. Create a polished grid in seconds without having to format each View from scratch.

  • Keep things consistent. Apply the same View Template across multiple Views to maintain a consistent look and feel across your Board.

  • Adapt as your data changes. Let View Templates adjust automatically when your View is restructured, so your formatting stays intact as your data evolves.

Types of View Templates

View Templates are available in Application Settings. You can choose from different types of View Templates depending on how your View is structured.

  • Simple. Configure header and cell styles for flat Views.

  • Alternate rows. Add alternating row colors to improve readability in wide Views such as Transaction Lists or long tables.

  • Alternate columns. Add alternating column colors to improve readability in wide Views such as Metrics or Tables with many months.

View Templates and existing formatting

⚠️ Important

Static, conditional and default formatting rules always take precedence over View Template formatting.

View Templates act as a predefined formatting layer and work alongside existing formatting.

Formatting is applied in the following order, from lowest to highest priority:

Higher-priority formatting overrides lower priority formatting. If static, conditional or default formatting is removed, the template style automatically reapplies, as long as no other overriding formatting remains.

Configure a View Template

⚠️ Important

You must have the Configure Application permission to create, delete or modify a View template. View templates can be created and modified in the Dev Environment in Test & Deploy

To configure a View Template for Members:

  1. Go to Settings in your Application.

  2. Select View Templates, then choose Create a new View Template. If templates already exist in your Application, select + New template in the top-right corner.

  3. Choose a template type then select Next: Configure template.

  4. Choose Select a View, then select a Block and a View from the drop-down menus.

  5. Select Start a preview.

  6. In the Details section, add a name and a description (optional) to indicate when the template should be used.

  7. In the Style section, you can change the template type using the Type of template dropdown, then configure the formatting options. Select Reset to revert changes.

Style options vary depending on the template type:

    1. Simple. Configure cell color, text color, and formatting for cells, row headers, and column headers.

    2. Alternate rows or columns. Choose to alternate rows or columns, then configure alternating cell styles and formatting for row headers and column headers.

      ℹ️ Note

Text color in all rows and headers updates automatically based on the fill color, unless fill and text color are unlinked. Use the lock symbol between the fill and text color options to link or unlink them.

  8. Select Save View Template to save your template.

You can also configure a View Template directly in the View by selecting View Templates then + New template from the bottom of the View Templates panel. Use steps 2-8 above to configure and save the View Template.

Manage View Templates

You can manage and edit your View Templates from your Application Settings or directly within a View.  To edit the template from the View, select View templates then hover over the template and select Edit.

From the View Templates section, select the three dots to the right of the template name to edit, rename, duplicate, or delete it.

Edit View Template

Select Edit to open the Edit View template panel. Adjust the name, description, or style of your View Template. Select Save View Template, then Save and apply to all Views.

Rename View Template

Select Rename to open the Edit View template panel and rename your View Template.

Duplicate View Template

Select Duplicate to add a name and description for the duplicate View template, then select Duplicate to create a copy.

Delete Template

Select Delete, then Delete View template, to delete your View Template.

Apply View Templates

⚠️ Important

No permission is required to apply a template. The Configure Public Views permission is only required to save a View with a template as a public View. Templates can always be applied and saved in private Views without this permission.

Members can apply and update a View Template directly from a View:

  1. Open the View and select View templates.

  2. From the View templates panel, hover over a template and select Use template to apply it to your View or select the Edit symbol to open the Edit View template panel and adjust the formatting. You can select Remove template to remove it from your View. To quickly apply a View Template, select a template to apply it, or select it again to remove it.

  3. Select Save View template then Save and apply to all Views to update the View Template and apply it your View.
