Before you begin

Chart color settings are available in:

  • Bar charts

  • Line charts

  • Combined charts

  • Pie charts

These chart types support the following chart color settings:

  • Color by determines how colors are assigned to chart series:

    • Theme applies predefined color palettes to chart series

    • Dimension Items apply consistent colors to Dimension Items across charts

  • Series colors customize colors for individual chart series

Waterfall charts use direct color pickers based on the Workspace Color Palette instead of chart color themes or Dimension Item colors.

Configure chart colors

Chart color settings are available in the Style section of chart settings.

To configure chart colors:

  1. Open a chart.

  2. Select Chart, then Format.

  3. Go to the Style section.

Color by

The Color by setting determines how colors are assigned to chart series.

Theme

Theme applies a predefined color palette to chart series.

Available themes include:

  • Pigment preset themes:

    • Pigment

    • Rainbow Spectrum

    • Copenhagen Facades

    • Sunset Boulevard

    • Winter Wonderland

    • Utility

    • Moreno Glacier

    • Autumn in New York

    • Summer Sky

  • Workspace Color Palette, available through the Edit palette option in Color theme

Colors are assigned based on their order in the palette. The first color is applied to the first Item in the chart, the second color to the second Item, and so on. The color sequence repeats when all available colors in the palette have been used.

To apply a chart theme:

  1. Open Format in chart settings.

  2. Under Style, select Theme from the Color by dropdown menu.

  3. Choose a theme from the Color theme dropdown menu.

To customize your Workspace Color Palette or add additional colors for use in themes:

  1. Open the Color theme dropdown menu.

  2. Select Edit palette.

  3. Select or configure colors in the Workspace Color Palette for use in your theme.

⚠️ Important

Changes to the Workspace Color Palette apply across the entire Workspace, including charts, Dimension Items, widgets, and other visual elements that use those colors.

Dimension Items

Dimension Items assign a consistent color to each Dimension Item across charts.

When Dimension Items is selected:

  • Chart series inherit colors assigned to Dimension Items

  • The same Item retains the same color across supported charts

To apply Dimension Item colors:

  1. Open Format in chart settings.

  2. Under Style, select Dimension Items from the Color by dropdown menu.

Customize series colors

Series colors allow individual chart series colors to be customized regardless of the selected Color by mode.

To customize series colors:

  1. Open Format in chart settings.

  2. Under Style, select Edit beside Series colors.

  3. Select the color circle beside a series.

  4. Choose a color from the palette.

  5. (Optional) Select Reset to reset your Series colors.

  6. Select anywhere outside of the palette to close it.

ℹ️ Note

Pigment preserves series color order when switching between themes. For example, if an Item is assigned the first color in a palette, it remains assigned to the first color regardless of which theme is selected.

Workspace Color Palette

The Workspace Color Palette can be used as chart color themes.

The first eight colors in the Workspace Color Palette are automatically applied as default colors for chart series and Dimension Items. Their position in the palette determines the order in which colors are assigned.

Additional colors expand the palette for manual formatting and can override default chart series and Dimension Item colors.

Waterfall charts use the Workspace Color Palette for:

  • Step color

  • Ascending values

  • Descending values
